Four students from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) were accepted to the University Innovation Fellows program, which is run by Stanford University Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (d.school) and aims to train changemakers on a global scale. Students who successfully completed the 6-week online training process developed their leadership skills in innovation, entrepreneurship and design-oriented thinking and received the title of "Innovation Fellow".

5G Technology Campus, established through the cooperation of Istanbul Technical University, Turkcell and Ericsson, was launched with a protocol signed on April 15, 2024. In the unit established at ITU Ayazağa Campus within the scope of the R&D cooperation that brings together the private sector and academia, 5G technologies will be developed and contributions will be made to the training of qualified human resources. The autonomous bus used in the campus is among the first studies focuses on by the Technology Campus.
The book titled “Applied Computational Hydraulics for Engineers,” written by Faculty of Civil Engineering’s retired faculty member Prof. Dr. Necati Ağıralioğlu and Faculty of Civil Engineering faculty member Prof. Dr. Mehmet Özger, was published by the US-based NOVA Publishing House.

In the research on Lake Salda, carried out by a group of about 30 US scientists together with ITU Faculty of Mines faculty member Prof. Dr. Nurgül Balcı, after the similarity of the lake with the Jezero crater on Mars was determined, a new stage started, focusing on the geological and climatic history of Mars.

Res. Asst. Dr. Muhammed Enes Atik from ITU Department of Geomatics Engineering was awarded at the IEEE GRSS Türkiye 2022 Thesis Competition for his Ph.D. thesis titled “Deep Learning-based Semantic Segmentation of Point Clouds” in the field of remote sensing.
As 2022 comes to an end, ITU discussed the activities carried out throughout the year, the achievements obtained and the goals for the coming year at the 2022 End-of-Year Meeting. At the meeting held at Ayazağa Campus Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center on December 29 with a wide participation, 2023 was declared the “Year of Sustainability”.
The active learning project prepared by ITU was granted support by the British Council under the “Connect4Innovation: UK-Turkey Higher Education Institutional Partnerships” call. The two-year project will enable the development of an “active learning model” that includes students, graduates, academics and industry partners. University of Strathclyde will support the project with its experience.
With the work of Prof. Dr. Okşan Çetiner Yıldırım from ITU Department of Astronautical Engineering published in the Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics in the field of aeronautics, ITU became the first university from Türkiye to feature in this prestigious journal and Prof. Dr. Çetiner became the first scientist from our country to be addressed. Prof. Dr. Çetiner was awarded the 2021 STO Excellence Award by the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) as a stakeholder of the research task group she was involved in together with Asst. Prof. Dr. Kemal Bülent Yüceil, who passed away two years ago.

ITU became “the world’s 47th most sustainable campus” in the international UI GreenMetric rankings, which evaluates academic campuses in terms of sustainability. ITU is the first and only Turkish university that is in the top 50, and with this achievement, it became the only university to rank first in Türkiye for the sixth time.

The 10th Türkiye Quaternary Symposium, which brought together scientists from around the world in the field of Earth Sciences, was held at ITU Ayazağa Campus on 2-4 November. The symposium that focuses on the Quaternary period, the last geological period the Earth is in today, shed light on climate change and natural disasters.
The free language learning application for foreign students, of which ITU is one of the stakeholders within the scope of Erasmus + KA2, is now available on Google Play and App Store. The application aims to teach 6 different languages, including Turkish, at A1 level.

ITU moved one step closer to its target by rising to the 201-250 range in Computer Science field according to “World University Rankings 2023” by Times Higher Education, one of the world’s most prestigious academic rating agencies.
Istanbul Technical University ranked in the 201-220 range in the world in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2023 overall rankings. In the “Environmental Impact” category, it ranked 110th in the world and 1st in Türkiye.

ITU AUV team became the world champion in the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition held in Singapore and made us proud. The joy of our team, which waved the flag of our country and the banner of our university in Singapore, was remarkable.

A cooperation protocol was signed between ITU Eurasia Institute of Earth Sciences (ITU EIES) and Chiba Institute of Technology in Japan. This protocol is aimed to examine the geoarchaeological samples that will be collected with the permission of the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism from archaeological sites including Göbeklitepe, Çatalhöyük, Kaman-Kalehöyük .

ITU Faculty of Management, Department of Management Engineering student team won first place in the USA-based “2021 ASEM Conference Student Case Analysis Competition”. Our team, which won first place in the same competition last year, became the first university team from outside the USA to win first place in a row.

Turkey's first technical university ITU continues to be the first choice of students who are ranked highest according to the results of the 2021 Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS). Turkey’s first and third in numerical score preferred ITU Computer Engineering Department. 5 students from the top 100, 48 from the top 1000, 139 from the top 2000 and 231 from the top 3000 became ITU students. According to 2021 YKS results, there are 604 students whose first choice is ITU, 1129 students whose first two choices are ITU, and 1666 students whose first three choices are ITU.

Following the earthquake of magnitude 6.6 that occurred in the region between Samos Island and Kuşadası Bay on 30 October 2020 in Izmir, TÜBİTAK MARMARA Research Vessel set sail on 31 May 2021 within the scope of the “Project for Determination of Seismicity and Active Tectonic Characteristics of Faults in Kuşadası Bay with High Resolution Seabed Measurements” of the Turkish Earthquake Platform, which was established under the coordination of TÜBİTAK in order to reveal the earthquake hazard in this region and to examine the fault lines, completed its maiden voyage on Sunday, 13 June 2021 and returned to Izmir Alsancak Port.
Ships polluting the sea in the Black Sea section of the Bosphorus will be detected by a remote monitoring system. Within the scope of the "Marine Pollution Detection for the Northern Region of the Bosphorus Project" initiated by IC İçtaş İnşaat and supported by ITU, a radar system with cameras was installed on Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge. Ships polluting the Bosphorus will be monitored by the camera and radar system. The system aims to prevent the sea and the coastline from being polluted by ship waste.

A cooperation protocol was signed between Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) to contribute to Turkey's “National Space Program” goal. With the protocol, within ITU Space Systems Design and Test Laboratory, “R&D Project of Multifunction Solar Panel in Nano, Micro, Cube Satellites” will be implemented with the coordination of İnovaTİM. The CubeSat ASELSAT 3U developed with the collaboration of Istanbul Technical University and ASELSAN was launched. Since 2005, 6 satellites developed by İTÜ Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics took their place in orbit.

The outcomes of the research study performed by Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) Eurasia Institute of Earth Sciences Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tolga Görüm and his Ph.D. student Seçkin Fidan to determine the fatal landslide events in Turkey were shared with the public. According to this study, a total of 1343 persons lost their lives in 389 fatal landslide events that occurred in the last 90 years in Turkey.

The results of Trainee Researcher Scholarship Program (STAR) initiated by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) in order to encourage undergraduate students to acquire R&D culture, take the first step into the research ecosystem and do research were announced. Projects by 108 İTÜ students were eligible for support as STARs of the future.
The results of the 3rd Call of ERA.Net RUS PLUS Program that aims broad-based and effective collaboration between Russia and 11 European Union member and associated countries including Turkey in scientific and technological research fields were announced. İTÜ’s project accepted to the program in the field of Nanotechnology was granted support. The project in which seven universities from five countries will work together will be supervised by İTÜ Faculty of Mechanical Engineering faculty member and İTÜ MEMS Research Center Director Prof. Dr. Levent Trabzon.

Prof. Dr. Hale Özgün became the 2019 winners of Environmental Service Award given by Akdeniz University (AU) Environmental Problems Research and Application Center and the Engineering Faculty of the same university.

İTÜ Vocational and Technical High School (İTÜ MTAL) is implementing “Ahi Order Teamwork in Education” project. Through applications to be carried out in 30 topics under 3 different fields consisting of Information Technologies, Maritime and Electric-Electronic Technology within the framework of the project, İTÜ MTAL students will learn to prepare projects as a team by being nurtured from diverse sources.

Last week İTÜ Talks hosted two important scientists from our university under the title “Tomorrow’s Water and Drought”. In the program broadcast live from İTÜ’s social media channels, our faculty members Prof. Dr. Mikdat Kadıoğlu and Prof. Dr. Lütfi Akça commented on Turkey’s scarcity of water, waste of water, fullness ratios of dams and the drought problem awaiting Turkey.
Our university made an assessment of 2020 in the End-of-Year Meeting, where new projects were discussed and the spirit of unity and solidarity was reinforced. Speaking at the event hosted by the İTÜ Rectorate, our Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu shared with İTÜ Family the projects to be realized in 2021, which is declared the “Breakthrough Year” for İTÜ as our university takes firm steps toward its 250th year. Prof. Dr. İsmail Demir, the President of Defence Industries under the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey and also our graduate, was the guest of honor of our End-of-Year Meeting and made a speech titled “Turkey of the Future and Engineering”.
