History

Istanbul Technical University, which is approaching its 250th anniversary, is one of the oldest technical universities in the world and was established with the name of “Mühendishane-i Bahr-i Hümayun” by Sultan Mustafa the Third. ITU, the first technical university in Turkey, is identified with its engineering and architectural education.

Born in 1974 in the village of Ziyaret, Suruç district of Şanlıurfa, where his family resided due to his father’s duty; Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu completed his primary, secondary and high school education in his hometown, Antalya.
Prof. Dr. Koyuncu graduated from Istanbul Technical University Environmental Engineering Department, which he started in 1990, and finished in 1995 as the second in the department. He completed his master’s degree in 1997 and his doctorate in 2002 in the same department.
Prof. Dr. Koyuncu became associate professor in 2004 and professor in 2010 and is currently working as a professor at the Department of Environmental Engineering, Istanbul Technical University. Besides, since 2019, he has been teaching as a visiting professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University (USA).
In 2002-2003, Prof. Dr. Koyuncu completed his post-doctoral studies in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University, one of the leading universities in the USA, with the scholarship granted by TÜBİTAK NATO B1. Afterwards, he took part in many projects as a visiting researcher at the University of Leuven (Belgium) for two months in 2003 and again at Rice University for a year in 2004.
Prof. Dr. Koyuncu held many academic and administrative positions through his career among which are Director of İTÜ Institute of Science and Technology (2012-2018), Member of İTÜ Board of Directors (2012-2016), Member of İTÜ Senate (2012-2018), Member of İTÜ Civil Engineering Faculty Board (2015-2018) and Member of the Commission for İTÜ Environmental Engineering Department.
Besides his membership of Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA); Prof. Dr. Koyuncu was elected a Member of the Committee for Climate Change and Health under the Asian Academy of Sciences in 2019 and a board member of Membrane Technologies Group under the International Water Association (IWA), positions which he actively carries on.
Prof. Dr. Koyuncu has been a member of Associate Professorship Commission of the Interuniversity Board since 2016. Within TÜBİTAK, Prof. Dr. Koyuncu acted as Presidency for TÜBİTAK Technology and Innovation Support Programs (TEYDEB), Executive Board Member for Biotech Group (2015-2017) and Consultant for TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) Environment and Cleaner Production Institute (2014-2017).
Prof. Dr. Koyuncu actively took part in numerous applied engineering projects, providing consultancy to many public and private organizations on issues related to his field. Prof. Dr. Koyuncu gave trainings and executed many projects on issues of infrastructure, waste management and recycling under the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, Union of Municipalities of Turkey (TBB), Turkey Petroleum Corporation (TPAO), the General Directorate of the Etimaden and Turkey Water Institute.

After completing his undergraduate education at Gazi University, Department of Econometrics in 1993, Prof. Dr. Bülent Güloğlu went to France for his master’s and doctoral studies with a scholarship from the Ministry of National Education. After completing his master’s and doctoral studies in 1997 and 2001, respectively, in Val de Marne University, he returned to Turkey to complete his compulsory service and started to work as a faculty member at Adnan Menderes University (2001-2005) and Pamukkale University (2005-2012). After becoming Associate Professor in the field of Econometrics, he went to USA with a TÜBİTAK scholarship to do postdoctoral studies in this field. Between 2012-2013, he worked on hypothesis testing in spatial panel models at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Since 2014, he has been working as a faculty member at Istanbul Technical University, Department of Economics. Prof. Dr. Bülent Güloğlu provided consultancy to various companies in the field of financial econometrics at ITU Teknokent and took part in many TEYDEB projects. He has also worked as a principal investigator and researcher in several TÜBİTAK 1001 projects. Prof. Dr. Bülent Güloğlu gave seminars in the field of econometrics in public and private institutions such as the Undersecretariat of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Trade, Borsa İstanbul, BRSA (Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency) and DEİK (Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey). Prof. Dr. Bülent Güloğlu has articles published in many national and international journals on Time Series Econometrics, Panel data econometrics, Spatial Econometrics, Financial Econometrics, Machine Learning. Prof. Dr. Bülent Güloğlu is married with three children and currently serves as the Vice-Rector responsible for R&D.

Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Durak Ata completed her undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University in 1996, 1999, and 2004. She continued her post-doctoral studies at the Statistical Signal Processing Laboratory of the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) between 2004-2005. She worked as a faculty member in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Yıldız Technical University between 2005 and 2015. Prof. Dr. Durak Ata worked at the University of Pittsburgh, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as an invited researcher in 2008. She started working at the Informatics Institute of ITU in 2015. After being Erasmus coordinator and research projects coordinator, she worked as the Deputy Director of the Institute between 2016-2018 and as the Director of the Institute since 2018. .
Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Durak Ata has undertaken the executive role of many research and development projects for telecommunication and defense industry applications funded by various public and private sector organizations, including TÜBİTAK and the Defense Industry Presidency. She continues her work in the fields of communication and digital signal processing.
Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Durak acts as vice rector responsible for international relations of our university.

Prof. Dr. Şule Itır Satoğlu was born in 1979 in Istanbul, Kadıköy. She completed her primary, secondary, and high school education in Ankara. In 2000, she completed her undergraduate degree in Yıldız Technical University Mechanical Engineering Department. Then, she received her Master's degree in Engineering Management from Istanbul Technical University, Department of Industrial Engineering, and her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering in 2008. She worked as a research assistant in the Industrial Engineering Department between 2001-2008. During her doctoral studies in 2004, she conducted research studies at the State University of New York, Buffalo. Prof. Dr. Satoğlu became an assistant professor in 2009, associate professor in 2013, and professor in 2019 in the Department of Industrial Engineering. Between 2012-2017, she worked as assistant manager at İTÜ Institute of Sciences and as vice-dean at the Faculty of Business Administration between 2018-2020. She is married with two children.

Prof. Dr. Ali Deniz was born in the town of Geyve in Sakarya in 1965. He completed his primary school, secondary school and high school education in his hometown Sakarya. After graduating from ITU Meteorological Engineering Department in 1988, he started his professional life in 1989 as a research assistant at ITU. In 1991, he received the title of Senior Meteorological Engineer from ITU Graduate School of Science. In 1997, he completed his Ph.D. He was appointed as Associate Professor in 2012 and as full Professor in 2019.
Prof. Dr. Ali Deniz is currently a Professor at Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Department of Meteorological Engineering. In addition to his academic career, he has worked at various administrative positions both at ITU and Marmara Clean Air Center Regional Directorate. He served as the Department Chair of Meteorological Engineering between 2006-2009 and as the Regional Director of Marmara Clean Air Center between 2010-2011. He is currently the Secretary-General of Istanbul Technical University and the Director of Eurasia Institute of Earth Sciences.
In his academic projects, he has been the principal investigator of 3 TÜBİTAK 1001 Projects, 2 Projects for the Turkish National Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (TNUGG), and in many projects for various public organizations. He has also worked as a researcher in a total of 7 projects for various public and private organizations including TÜBİTAK and TNUGG. In these projects, Prof. Dr. Ali Deniz mostly focused on air pollution and renewable energy sources.
For the past 5 years, he has been giving Atmospheric Dynamics I and II and Aeronautical Meteorology courses regularly in the Department of Meteorological Engineering, and previously gave Advanced Synoptic Meteorology as a master’s course and various common courses. In 2015, he acted as the Chair of the Symposium on Atmospheric Sciences organized biennially by the Department of Meteorological Engineering. He has been the thesis advisor for 8 master’s theses and 2 Ph.D. theses completed until now, and is currently the thesis advisor for 5 master’s theses and 6 Ph.D. theses under progress.
Prof. Deniz specializes in the atmospheric dynamics, meso-scale and synoptic-scale characteristics of weather events, air pollution and aviation meteorology. For his academic publications, he has 26 international articles in the SCI category and 6 articles in other international journals. Ali Deniz has a total of 10 publications in national refereed journals scanned by ULAKBİM, and a total of 92 papers in national and international conferences. According to Web of Science (WOS) database, his H-Index is 8 and he has 363 citations. According to Google Academic database, his H-Index is 10 and he has 706 citations.
Prof. Dr. Ali Deniz has focused on synoptic scale weather events and climate change during and immediately after his doctorate. In this context, he examined the spatial variation of climate indices for Turkey. Also he has revealed the climatology of rainy and dry times over Turkey. He focused on stable atmospheric conditions in later times. He has done studies on climatology of air pollution and its effects. Also, he has numerically revealed the effects of these on human health. Moreover, he examined more than one article on the fog incident occurring in stable atmospheric conditions in terms of the aviation sector, and he conducted two different projects related to this. In his recent studies, he showed a tendency to unstable atmospheric conditions and revealed the climatological characteristics of thunderstorms for the Marmara Region. Subsequently, he carried out studies for lightning incidents at airports in the Marmara Region. In his latest studies, he continues to investigate the climatology and effects of precipitation and air pollution. He has used many statistical methods, numerical weather forecast model, climate models and machine learning algorithms in all his studies.
