Results of the scientific evaluation of projects proposed within the framework of TÜBİTAK 1001 – “Mucilage Research Special Call” by TÜBİTAK Research Funding Program Directorate (ARDEB) were announced. As a result of the scientific evaluation, 4 projects prepared by Istanbul Technical University (ITU) academics are granted support.
Significant achievements have been made toward "autonomous ship" technology with the studies carried out at ITU Faculty of Naval Architecture and Marine Sciences. As part of the studies performed at the ITU Pond, previously obtained numerical simulation results were confirmed with the 4.5-meter-long test ship.
Department of Landscape Architecture faculty member Asst. Prof. Dr. Muhammed Ali Örnek has been elected as Region 8 Director of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA), which is considered one of the prestigious communities of landscape architecture in the international arena.

A group of scientists from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) announced a technical evaluation report that includes the findings and possible solutions for the mucilage (sea saliva) problem threatening the Marmara Sea.
Following the earthquake of magnitude 6.6 that occurred in the region between Samos Island and Kuşadası Bay on 30 October 2020 in Izmir, TÜBİTAK MARMARA Research Vessel set sail on 31 May 2021 within the scope of the “Project for Determination of Seismicity and Active Tectonic Characteristics of Faults in Kuşadası Bay with High Resolution Seabed Measurements” of the Turkish Earthquake Platform, which was established under the coordination of TÜBİTAK in order to reveal the earthquake hazard in this region and to examine the fault lines, completed its maiden voyage on Sunday, 13 June 2021 and returned to Izmir Alsancak Port.
Ships polluting the sea in the Black Sea section of the Bosphorus will be detected by a remote monitoring system. Within the scope of the "Marine Pollution Detection for the Northern Region of the Bosphorus Project" initiated by IC İçtaş İnşaat and supported by ITU, a radar system with cameras was installed on Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge. Ships polluting the Bosphorus will be monitored by the camera and radar system. The system aims to prevent the sea and the coastline from being polluted by ship waste.
Istanbul Technical University hosted the “Research-Oriented Specialization Program Sector Matching Meeting” coordinated by the Council of Higher Education (CoHE). The meeting held at Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center in ITU Ayazağa Campus was attended by CoHE President Prof. Dr. Yekta Saraç, President of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal and rectors of research and candidate research universities.
Offering transportation solutions suitable for the mobility needs of the era in its factory in Turkey, Karsan is now conducting a new project after Romania, for Autonomous Atak Electric, the first Level 4 self-driving bus in America and Europe.
ITU Eurasia Institute of Earth Sciences faculty members Prof. Dr. Gültekin Topuz and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz Hakan Göğüş together with Prof. Dr. Russell Pysklywec and Ph.D. student Erkan Gün from University of Toronto proposed a new hypothesis about the tectonic movements and deformation processes of the oceans and continents that have been going on for millions of years. The research results were published in Nature Geoscience, one of the most prestigious journals of geosciences, in May.

Istanbul Technical University continues to share its academic accumulation of knowledge with High Schools. Istanbul Technical University added a new one to its cooperation protocols with Vocational and Technical Anatolian High Schools and Fine Arts High Schools. In this context, it signed a cooperation protocol with Nişantaşı Nuri Akın Anatolian High School, one of our country’s oldest high schools.
“Turkey Accessibility Awards” organized by the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Services were given in a ceremony held at the Presidential Complex. ITU Faculty of Electrical and Electronics, Department of Control and Automation faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Volkan Sezer received the “Jury’s winner” award in “Scientific Studies and Projects in the Field of Accessibility Category”.
ITU Railway Transportation Safety and Security Application and Research Center, whose regulation was published in the Official Gazette dated March 22, 2021, aims to develop projects on railway safety and security.
